Meeting 15th July 2009
Another excellent meeting tonight with literally standing room only as we some more “new” guests in the shape of Mr & Mrs Moyle who came to the early meeting on the “Blackmill Isolation Hospital” article for J2009, which has been written by four former Nurses at the hospital who trained and wqorked there from the 1950s through to its closure in the 1980s.
We then had the normal minutes and usual “tour around the room” with of course refreshments by mine host “TJ”…..
Barbara Brooks gave us some superb information on a hitherto unknown “Ogmore Boy”, Dr Richard Thomas BEVAN (1914-1997) who amongst his many achievements was the Chief Medical Officer of the Welsh Office and in 1974 was appointed an Honorary physician to her majesty the Queen. Surely a topic for a future Journal article if only we can get in touch with his family???
We then finished off the evening with another “Trip into the Digital Archive”, tonight looking at the Ocean Colliery, Wyndham Colliery and Central Washery images. (see image opposite).
Several of the images contained our very “fresh faced” Chairman, who was never without his “Dai Cap” in the images, despitenearly everyone else wearing standard issue “Hard hats”:-)
A very interesting evening ensued with many of the past colliers of the Ocean Western colliery being named and several interesting features being pointed out for further discussion (mot just Trev`s cap) with the promise of some more picture for our archive in future……
