1925 2nd Rhondda Main Colliery Strata Information

The 2nd Rhondda Main Colliery (9109-1924) was originally named “The Plantation Colliery”, though the name was quickly changed to the Rhondda Main Colliery. It was known locally as the “New Pits” as the original Rhondda Main Colliery operated in the area of what is now Walters Road but closed in 1872. There were three shafts opened, Catherine, Anne and Mary, named after the daughters of owner of the Lewis Merthyr Consolidated Collieries Limited, William Lewis, 1st Baron Merthyr, and after whom Lewistown was named as the first two streets were built by Leiws Mrthyr to accomdate the miners for the Rhondda Main Colliery. The mary Shaft, across the river from the Main Colliery was abandoned fairly early and the whole collioery was abandoned in 1924 due to running sand.
